------------------------------- MODERN FLINTKNAPPING----------------------------

Biface III

This biface is made of Georgetown and is 7 inches long and 4 inches wide at the widest point. It has an average thickness of .38 inches and average width of 3.51 inches giving it an average W/T of 9.2/1. This biface has some very long wide flake removal with several of the flakes running 2 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide. Several of the flakes removed were almost half the thickness of the blade at the edge of the blade, in other words at point of the platform the blade may be .17 inches thick and right next to it where flake was not removed may be .32 inches thick. The late flintknapper Gene Stapleton commented about this once on one of Bill's pressure flaked blades stating the flake removed was as thicker than the blade itself. But this biface is ALL percussion and risk of breakage is very high when taking off such big bold flakes. I will try to demonstrate this in side view pictures below. There are divots on both sides which were created by using a punch to remove an island, which also runs a high risk of breakage.(side 1 has two divots and have pictures of the circled divots below)  $150 includes shipping.

Below is my attempt to show what I was talking about above in my comments, although getting good pictures of this is hard for me since i am not an expert photographer. The red arrow is pointing to the area where the flake was removed and the blue arrow is pointing at the the area a flake was not removed. As you can see, there is a big difference in the thickness at the two areas. Some who are not familiar with flintknapping may ask, so why does this matter? The point is to show the knapper was willing to take big risk of breaking the blade while taking aggressive bold flake removal.
